COTE: Call for White Papers

The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) seeks to publish white papers on specific topics that relate to the COTE Measures of Sustainable Design.

COTE seeks white paper submissions from architectural educators, practitioners, and colleagues from the allied professions (interior designers, engineers, sociologists, hydrologists, ecologists, etc.). The authors may not be manufacturers or manufacturers’ representatives. Authors may not write about subjects that are specifically related to the product or service of the sponsorship organization.

Authors are invited to submit abstracts of 200-600 words along with their contact info and basic credentials (not more than 2 pages total). Selected authors will receive $1,000. Volunteers currently serving in any official capacity with COTE are ineligible for stipends. Past chairs and others who have served previously are eligible.

COTE will accept submissions year-round and will review the submissions on a quarterly basis according to the following schedule:

Deadline Reviewed By Authors Notified By
July 1 July 15 August 1
October 1 October 15 November 1
January 1 January 15 February 1
April 1 April 15 May 1

If commissioned, authors will have three months to produce papers of 1,000 to 4,000 words in Word format with images.  AIA staff will review the submitted content, and authors will have a chance to see any suggested changes. White papers will be published on the COTE web site (and Soloso), where they will be archived for at least two years. They will also be featured as the lead story in an issue of COTEnotes, which goes out to 9,000 AIA COTE members, and COTE will offer the paper to other Knowledge Communities and other sources as well.

At present, there is no budget for images. AIA/COTE will work with authors to reach out to firms on this subject as appropriate. Authors are encouraged to consider the AIA COTE Top Ten winners as candidates for inclusion in their papers (access to images from those projects will be facilitated by COTE).

COTE will commission at least one (1) and as many as four (4) white papers in 2008, depending on how many submissions are received and on how many sponsors can be secured.

Please send submissions to Shaw Hubbard at shawhubbard@aia.org.
